Brevard County Fire Rescue applied for and received a FEMA grant for smoke alarms with a 10 year battery. This grant was earmarked to provide free smoke alarms for the elderly, low income and those homes with children. Also quoted was that no one that requested would be turned down. The current Code requires a smoke alarm in each sleeping room and one in each hall within 30 feet of a bedroom door.
Smoke alarms have a working life of only 10 years after that they should be taken down and thrown away and install a new unit. No more having to check and/or replace the alarm, so if your alarm is greater than 10 years of age or you are not sure; how do you know it will work when it is needed?
